Here’s how the game breaks down: Skills – solutions we found. Bosses – threats that forced us to find them. Levels – a simple way to mark the era rather than pointing them out individually.
Level 1: Survival Mode
Fire didn’t happen because one of the early humans was trying to impress the opposite gender; honestly, it could have been the case, but here it is not. It happened because of the cold; the predators were winning. Stone tools, same story – famine came first, the skill came second.
Then came a boss we didn’t beat. The Toba super volcano, roughly 74,000 years ago, pushed humanity to the edge of extinction. No skill saved us. We just survived it.
Agriculture was the first skill that actually ended a fight instead of dodging it. Chronic famine had been the enemy for tens of thousands of years. Farming didn’t weaken it. It ended the fight.
That’s the pattern for the rest of history: the boss shows up first, and the skill unlocks after—through trial and error.
Level 2: Intro to Knowledge
This is where writing changed the game. People could finally pass knowledge on instead of starting from scratch every generation.
Then the boss shows up with the fact that knowledge alone couldn’t handle the fight completely. Say Black Death (Pandemic) took roughly a third of Europe. Medicine wasn’t ready. The boss won.
But the loss pushed the next unlocks like – the printing press – ideas spread quickly, the scientific blueprint to give a step-by-step way to test ideas for fighting future bosses rather than guessing.
Level 3: Industrial Wins
Vaccines wiped out smallpox in 1980 – the only disease humanity has ever completely erased. A boss fight won, not just survived.
The Spanish Flu, in 1918, was a boss that won instead. It pushed virology a century ahead.
Later, humanity unlocked nuclear energy. It ended another boss fight – World War II – and created a new one right away – the Cold War. A boss we contained rather than ever beating it.
Some skills don’t beat the game. They just change the fight.
Level 4: The Bosses we are dealing with
The ozone hole – one of humanity's biggest wins—science figured it out, and the world followed through. Proof the species can team up when it decides to.
COVID-19 is the fastest turnaround on record. mRNA technology spent years in the lab, then went global almost overnight. Then there's our old friend: AI – where the pattern breaks. The only skill where the unlock itself is the boss.
And a few fights we are fighting, with the skill needed to win still locked:
- Climate change – can't be fully beaten without fusion energy, or something like that
- Engineered pandemics – biosecurity solutions aren’t there yet
- Asteroid or gamma-ray burst impact—we're still missing a full early-warning system.
So, What Level Are We Actually On?
Here's the reveal.
If humanity had a progress bar; the Kardashev scale says we're barely getting started. Think level 2 or 3 out of 100.
We don't level up before the boss fight. We level up because of it. Fire, farming, and vaccines all came from solving real problems.
Which probably makes AI the strangest boss – the first one we built ourselves.
