It Started in Bristol
It started small. In the 1970s, residents of Bristol, England began complaining to their city council about a rumble that showed up only after dark. It didn't stay local for long. Soon, thousands across the UK were saying they'd heard it too. Scientists got involved, ran studies, published papers – and never found a single source. By 1989, the people hearing it had even formed their own support group: the Low-Frequency Noise Sufferers Association.
Then, in the early 1990s, the hum found its most famous home: Taos, New Mexico. Close to 11 percent of the town reported hearing it. Some residents moved away entirely. The military got blamed. So did nerve gas. So did aliens. Even researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory showed up to investigate. They left without finding a clear source.
That could have been the end of it – just another mystery nobody could explain. But it didn't stop. Then it started popping up everywhere – Newton Square, Pennsylvania. Kokomo, Indiana. Some people even left their homes, claiming the hum was so intense they could see dead leaves vibrating on the ground. Vermont. Alabama. British Columbia. Scotland. And now, most recently: San Francisco's Sunset District – and neighborhoods across Cincinnati, where people said a siren - like sound kicked in almost every night around 10 p.m.
Every Suspect, and Why Each One Failed
Every time it shows up somewhere new, the same hunt begins. Could it be a secret military communication system built for a nuclear war? Sounds convincing – but the broadcast schedules don't line up. A secret weather-control station in Alaska? Shut down over a decade ago. The jet stream, audible to a lucky few? Doesn't hold up outside of the UK. Where the jet stream barely moves. The Earth's own resonant frequency, sometimes called its "heartbeat"? Changes with the seasons in ways the hum doesn't.
One investigator who spent years chasing the sound–driving into remote deserts with infrasonic microphones, renting houses just to cut their power and listen – found something that actually held up under scrutiny: high-pressure natural gas pipelines. Some run at over 1,500 pounds per square inch, ten times the combustion pressure inside a sports car engine. The one researcher compared hum reports with major pipeline routes in the UK, Louisiana, and Texas. The overlap was way too consistent to look like a coincidence,
But even he stopped short of calling it solved. But then the story gets weird. In Seattle and parts of California, the "hum" wasn't mysterious at all – it was a fish. Male midshipman fish literally hum to attract mates, and they're loud enough to make houseboats vibrate. In other places, the sound came from sewer pipes, electrical transformers… or nothing anyone could detect.

And that's the real reveal: after 50 years, the hum was never one thing. Turns out, "The Hum" probably isn't one thing. In one town, it's a pipeline. In another, it's a fish. And in many cases, researchers think the sound might actually be coming from the listener's own ears – not the outside world.
There's another weird clue. People who hear the Hum are reported to be much more likely to have a family history of autism or ADHD. They're also far more likely to be fully ambidextrous. Nobody knows why yet. But it suggests the hum was never really about location. It's about wiring.
